Why we include Baby Massage in our BabyBeats classes

The benefits and origins of baby massage

Baby massage has some origins in India where it is still a part of many babies’ daily routine and has multiple benefits for both parent and baby.

We include baby massage at the end of every BabyBeats class to help promote relaxation and calm in both baby and parent.

Here are some of the benefits of baby massage and why we include this element in our classes:

  • Touch is vitally important for babies. It can have a beneficial effect on many of our bodies’ systems.
  • Touch helps to stimulate oxytocin in both baby and parent. Oxytocin is a hormone that promotes calm and can help bring baby into a restful state.
  • Massage can help to relieve wind, colic and constipation as some of the techniques used help to stimulate the area around the colon, which in turn aids these processes. A baby’s digestive system is immature at birth so massage can help relieve some of these uncomfortable or painful conditions.
  • Circulation is increased during baby massage, bringing fresh nutrients & oxygen to the tissues around the body as well as taking waste products away. (This is also why we advise that babies are not massaged within 48 hours of their vaccinations as it will also increase their circulation).
  • Massage may bring some relief from respiratory problems as it can help increase the flow of oxygen & carbon dioxide to/from the area.
  • Touch helps to relieve pain as ‘touch signals’ reach the brain quicker than ‘pain signals’. With the increased production of endorphins through touch, pain may be reduced for babies, helping to calm them.
  • Skin conditions can be improved as dead cells are removed and pores are encouraged to open to help remove toxins.

In the early weeks and months of being a new parent, getting to know your baby may feel overwhelming. Baby massage can give you dedicated time with baby to focus on communicating, tuning into their cues, enjoying skin to skin and eye contact together.

It can help to regulate your emotions as well as theirs.

Sometimes babies won’t be in the mood for massage and that’s ok. There is always options to change position, sometimes your baby may not want to be laid on their back but would be happy sat supported on your knee. Many of the techniques can still be used in a variety of positions.

We use sensory toys and lights which can help stimulate the nervous sytem and promote relaxation at the end of class.

Every class is baby led, so if baby isn’t enjoying massage one week, you don’t need to force them. Cuddles, feeding, sleeping, etc. are all just as valuable for baby.

Baby Massage is a lovely way to conclude a BabyBeats class after the stimulation of exercise and play….the benefits for you as a parent are just as important.
